Women empowerment always has been a focus area in educational and social circles. The Alaka Mahavidyalaya in Jagatsinghpur is a live example that follows and practices this aspect in its educational system. The College was found by eminent persons of the locality under the patronage and initiative of renowned former Advocate General of Odisha, Late Shri Gangadhar Rath. Over time, the institution has grown into an attractive destination of learning and nation building. During the last 43 years of its existence, the college has produced a number of civil servants, judges, teachers, lecturers, and Professionals.

There are various aspects of this college which puts it as a leader in women and girl’s empowerment. For example, it’s self-defence class, Motivational Class, advanced sexual harassment cell and creative gardening course are unparalleled. These facilities have given the girls renewed confidence.

Self Defence for Girls

Under the state youth policy 2013, a Self-Defence Training Programme for+2 & +3 Girls has been started in the college from the session 2017-18. The college has five Master trainers who are conducting training programmes for the girl students.  The women trainers are Jayalaxmi Sahoo, Adyasa Priyadarsini,  Sushmita Kar,  Maitriprava Nayak and Bishnupriya Sahoo who were jointly supported by Smt. Jolly Pattanayak & Smt. Salila Das, Prof ln-charge of Self-Defence.

News Reading and Motivational Class

Intellectual activities like News reading and motivation classes are compulsory for the girl students of Alaka Mahavidyalaya. Perhaps it is the first degree college in the nearby districts to organize “A News Reading Motivational Class” every week to inspire, encourage and give self-confidence to the girl students of +2 and +3 streams.

In this class students are allowed to review and readout weekly news bulletins to keep them abreast of the day to day happenings in the world and in our locality. Teachers also give motivational and moral speeches which help a lot in purifying the teenager’s heart, mind and soul.

Sexual Harassment Cell

The college has a Sexual harassment cell to counter any sort of Sexual Harassment, eve teasing or any other activity against girl students and women staff. Proper counselling is also offered to girl students every month on how to counter any kind of harassment in real life.

College Garden

Apart from the above, creative gardening is also taught to girl’s in this institute. A beautiful garden in front of the main Block of the college created by the late Gangadhar Rath is being maintained by the staff members and girl students. The college has been shortlisted for Prakruti Mitra award in 2021.

Alaka (Degree) Mahavidyalaya has achieved a unique place in Jagatsinghpur district as an education hub excelling in women empowerment.
